Message to Career Trainers

If there is one thing I've learned after 25 years with clients, it's this...

The more I learn, the more I realize just how little I knew.

This is not a sermon about certifications or training philosophies; that debate will likely never be finished as new material arrives in digestible formats.  This is about education on a larger and broader scale.  This is a platform that would encourage all trainers and their clients to ask themselves, "Am I giving/getting what I'm paid for/paying?"

If you're currently making your living as a professional personal trainer, ask yourself if your really worth what the client is paying for.   If you're currently working with a trainer, you should ask yourself if your getting value for the money you're paying.
I've witnesses thousands of trainers perform their duties around the world, and the variety of styles and techniques are nothing short of astounding.  Ranging from ignorant to fantastic, I've experienced the full spectrum of people calling themselves Personal Trainers.  In the end, many people eventually find the trainer that suit their personality traits and "settle in" to develop their relationship.  The final product becomes the relationship, not the individual goals of the client.

Personally, I find this both important and dis-heartening.  I can appreciate the value of the relationship between trainer & client.  I've had clients share personal information with me over the years that would certainly be worthy of writing a tabloid style book. I can appreciate the level of trust that is built, as well as the friendships which many times blossom under this working relationship.
The reality however is that the client hires the trainer to help them accomplish a specific goal regarding their behavior, their health, their body fat, their nutritional habits, strength, size, speed, flexibility, etc, etc.

Both parties normally start on this path of mutually agreed upon goals/results, but eventually, both parties usually settle into the relationship.  Sound familiar?  So the question still remains...are you "giving/getting what you're paid for/paying?"

Several years ago, I had the opportunity to learn something that would have changed my life dramatically.  A concept of audio-styled personal training was introduced to me from a former client.  Since I had built an international career from duplicating myself and others in the business operations of personal training field, I THOUGHT I had a handle on what was possible, what was available in the commercial fitness world.  Audio workouts...give me a break.
Offered up a serving of humble pie, I almost made myself vomit after trying my second session.  I could have shut it off.  I could have hit the STOP or PAUSE button.  The craziest thing happened to me that day, that should not have been such a surprise...The more I know, the more I realize just how little I really knew.

I assumed there's no way an audio device could do what a trainer does...I was wrong.
I assumed there's no way an audio device could make me work harder than I could make myself work...I was wrong.
I assumed there's no way an audio device could teach me anything new...Man, was I wrong.

If you're a career trainer, the kind that learns, grows & adapts: you're on the right track and you should pay attention to what is happening with the technology side of fitness.  If your training style is one of
functional movement screens, corrective exercise before full-blown systemic training, engagement, medicine ball work, balance training, plyometrics and foam rolling...YOU WILL NEVER BE REPLACED-YOU'RE WORTH EVERY PENNY.

If you're the kind of trainer that sits on your rear-end while your clients do the work, you're about to be replaced.  If you're the type of trainer who's only value is a road-map of exercises for the day/week/month...your obsolete.  If you're the type of trainer who has a limited list of exercises, techniques or tools, you're services are no longer required.  If you're the type of trainer who leans against the frame of the leg curl & checks out the T & A in the gym when you should be watching your client, who are you kidding?

So to all the sub-par trainers out there, you need to wake up and realize that technology is now available that can replace you...no questions asked, you're fired.  You have two choices-up your game or be replaced.

To the trainers out there who sift through the maze of education; keeping what works & throwing away what doesn't, there's plenty of technology out there to help your clients achieve their goals faster.  A great trainer hangs many tools on their belt; knowing which tool works best, when to use it, and how to use it best...that's what makes a good trainer great.  To those fans of  BodyBug, NASM, Paul Chek, PTonthenet, FreeMotion, Powerplate, TRX, Muscle Activation Technique, and a few other "outside the box" traditional training tools, I'm really speaking to you.
I would encourage all trainers who are reading this to check out NextFit.  It's real, it's here to stay, and it can change the way you operate your training business.  Simply adding it your clients off-day cardio sessions to ensure compliance, increase intensity, and variety will help them move closer to their goals.
Stretching and Yoga are now easily incorporated into their home workouts, as well as options for them to stay on track when traveling or on vacation.
Words cannot describe how audio clips are seamlessly stitched together to create a workout that is never the same, always changing, always adapting, and always progressing.  The exercise "deck gets shuffled" every workout, so clients NEVER repeat the same choice of exercises, yet the exercises given are all still relative to that persons' goals, history, location, time & experience.  Think that's impossible?  Guess again!  It's here, it's kick-ass, and it will change the face of fitness instruction.

How long can you expect to train 8-10 hours/day in the gym?  Have you hit your own self-imposed ceiling of income because you're not duplicating yourself, or using all available means to work smarter..not harder?

Wake up!  You can either stay with the times or get left behind.
